John Ryder hopes to be the next for Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez for the weekend of May 5 in 2023 and spoke of the way in which he would win the fight against the Mexican for the 168-pound belts.

“Eddie (Hearn) is responsible for reaching an agreement and I know that he is talking with Canelo and with (Eddy) Reynoso,” Ryder said in an interview with the YouTube channel, Boxing Social.

“I wait patiently for either the United Kingdom or the United States. I hope I really hope to be the one in the opposite corner on the weekend of Cinco de Mayo.”

Hearn has Ryder as his priority for the matchup in the UK. He even spoke of the Emirates Stadium as a possible venue for the clash. While Eddy Reynoso said that he sees John as an interesting clash and is open to that fight taking place in the near future.

Canelo fought two bouts in 2022. In the first of them he was surpassed by Dmitry Bivol at 175 pounds and in the second he beat Gennady Golovkin, in what has been his only defense as super middleweight universal champion.

John Ryder looking for Canelo fight in 2023

Ryder is inspired by the Russian’s performance to be able to beat Canelo, although he explained that his style is very different from Dmitry’s.

“I think if you fight up close that’s how you can beat him,” analyzed John Ryder. “At middle distance he is a fantastic fighter. I think Bivol and others have already shown that if they fight up close and go in little by little and then walk away, that’s how they can beat him. But I’m not like that, I don’t have that style. To beat him I will have to work well at what I am good at”.

Canelo had surgery a few weeks ago on his left hand, so in January he expects to hit again. And already by May he made his return to the ring.

Ryder was placed as the WBO mandatory challenger after his victory over Zach Parker by knockout. Also others who will seek another opportunity against Saúl are David Benavidez and Caleb Plant, who will fight in March 2023.
