It is hard to fathom a more random matchup in sports than Weston McKennie vs Puss in Boots, but the world of animation and advertising makes everything possible.
In a new DreamWorks crossover ad promoting both the ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ movie and the World Cup, Juventus and USMNT‘s McKennie walks onto a soccer field and starts getting taunted.
“Look at what the cat dragged in!”, the feline voiced by Antonio Banderas says… “You may be a champions but you can’t defeat Puss in Boots!”
To which Weston McKennie replies: “You’re not the only one that knows magic tricks. [The USMNT starts juggling his soccer ball] You? Beat me? In those kicks? Not happening.” At which point, the cat made popular by the Shrek franchise goes in for an epic bicycle kick that sends ripples through the air.
Puss then retrieves the glass of milk he let go of mid-air and starts licking away.
What’s next for Weston McKennie after US World Cup exit?
The Juventus midfielder is still not back at training with his team after the USMNT’s exit in the round of 16 of the World Cup. The US international will join his squad in Vinovo, at Juve’s training center, before having a few days off during the Holidays.
According to several English media outlets, Chelsea and Tottenham are interested in acquiring the USMNT midfielder and are preparing a bid for him. So far, he’s played 11 games (with 1 assist and 1 goal) so far in Serie A in the 2022-23 season.
