On Thursday, MLB revealed the list of finalists for the 2022 Gold Glove Awards, given to the best defenders of the season. The winners will be known on November 1, before Game 4 of the World Series.
Each position has three finalists from each league, including the award for “Utility,” meaning those players who play multiple positions, recently added by MLB.
The winner of each category, the 30 MLB franchise managers, and up to six coachs vote for a pool of players from their League, and cannot vote for players from their team.
These votes make up 75% of the total, and the remaining 25% will be accounted for by the defensive index developed by the SABR (Society for American Baseball Research).
The only caveat is for the Utility position, where a specific defensive formula has been worked out.
