The MLS SuperDraft 2023 will be held virtually on Wednesday, December 21, when teams will decide which new college prodigies will join Major League Soccer ahead of the 2023 season.

This is the 24th edition of this event, which for the first time will be held in December instead of January. This means that the players from the United States and Canada will have two more weeks to adapt to their clubs.

Since its introduction in 2000, the MLS SuperDraft was conceived as a combination of a college draft for graduating footballers and the MLS Supplemental Draft, which included the rest of the players.

Over time, the Draft has lost momentum because clubs have been able to identify prospects and develop their own talent. However, several MLS stars have emerged from this process.

How does the 2023 MLS SuperDraft work?

The SuperDraft has three rounds, and each team is allowed one pick per round – 88 total this year (one compensatory pick).

Expansion team St. Louis City SC will get the first pick, followed by the teams that did not qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs and starting with the team with the fewest points in the 2022 regular season.

The remaining positions are ranked by the fewest regular season points among teams that were eliminated in the same round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

From the SuperDraft to the World Cup

The official MLS website highlighted the importance of the event, as several players competing for the United States and Canada in the 2022 World Cup were products of the SuperDraft – 11 in total among the CONCACAF nations.

“The USMNT list includes Nashville SC center back Walker Zimmerman, who started all but one game in Qatar,” the MLS official website reads.

Atlanta United center back Miles Robinson (No.2 overall in 2017 SuperDraft) would have likely been a lock if not for a season-ending Achilles injury.

“Meanwhile, 2022 CF Montreal standout defenders Alistair Johnston and Kamal Miller started every game during Canada’s first men’s World Cup appearance in 36 years.”
