Last year, mid-season, the Los Angeles Rams decided to sign Odell Beckham Jr. after he was cut by the Cleveland Browns and that move proved key to them ultimately being able to win Super Bowl LVI, the spectacular receiver is still without a team and the Kansas City Chiefs have made a move that could give a hint that they will follow a similar strategy.
Travis Kelce’s contract restructuring
Last Tuesday, Kansas City reached an agreement to restructure the contract of spectacular tight end Travis Kelce, thereby freeing up $3.455 million in salary cap space, a move that suggests they are doing everything in their power to pair the famed OBJ with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
What makes one think this narrative has a high degree of veracity is the revealing words of the aforementioned Kelce in his latest appearance on the “New Heights” podcast.
“It’s a start to a move, right? You’re freeing up cap space to be able to do something,” Travis Kelce said. “My agent just hit me up and said that they want to free up some cap space, so I was like, ‘I get the money now? Alright!'”
Outgoing, as is his style, Kelce wasn’t afraid to speak directly about Beckham, and while nothing is official, the tight end’s words hint that the rumor is close to fruition.
What Travis Kelce knows about Odell Beckham Jr.
“I want them to come true. I have not heard anything in the locker room or anything around the facility,” Kelce said. “Something’s in the air for sure, and if it means OBJ? Alright!”
It’s worth remembering that the Chiefs traded away wide receiver Tyreek Hill last offseason, who was obtained by the Miami Dolphins and had left Mahomes without his biggest vertical threat, so another OBJ move in order to win a Super Bowl seems to make all the sense in the world.
