From a racing family – his mother Sophie Kumpen was a karting ace and his father Jos a former F1 driver – Verstappen rose through the ranks to become the youngest karting world champion.
The Dutchman was a sensational talent in junior series too – so much so that he was catapulted into Formula 1 in 2015, skipping GP2 to join Toro Rosso in the highest tier of motorsport at the age of just 17. It was controversial but he would soon go on to become F1’s youngest points scorer… and then youngest Grand Prix winner.
