Fernandez had an up and down 2022 since breaking through in 2021. She won her second career title at the WTA event in Monterrey, Mexico, and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open.

But she was then sidelined with a foot injury until Toronto, saying she should have withdrawn during Roland Garros rather than playing on. Since returning, Fernandez lacked momentum, going 5-7 for the rest of the year.

It was announced Thursday that she earned Tennis Canada’s Player of the Year honors alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime.
