“They actually weren’t saying ‘boo’. It’s just a stupid [chant],” Kyrgios said. “They were doing some Ronaldo thing. Ronaldo does it every time he scores.
“I thought they were going to do it for like 10 minutes—they did it for two and a half hours. Like every point, I don’t know why. It was a zoo out there.”
“Those who are doing it probably have a low IQ,” said Daniil Medvedev, having heard the “disappointing” chant in response to his break points and second serves.
The Russian, who celebrated his 2021 US Open victory with a FIFA-inspired move of his own, eventually warmed up to the chants. He would later sign ‘Siuuuuuu’ on the camera lens en route to the singles final.
“I was like, ‘Well, okay, I’m going to write it then because everybody is doing it,’” he explained. “So, I guess that’s the thing to do.”
Maybe this upcoming season fans at the Australian Open should just stick to the old “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” instead?
